Russia ended the Winter Olympics top of the medal table, thanks to golds late in the games, from Victor An in the short-track speed skating, Vic Wild in the snowboard parallel slalom and the four man bobsleigh. Norway ended the games with eleven golds, thanks to Ole Einar Bjoerndalen winning his thirteenth Olympic medal in the mixed biathlon relay. This made him the most decorated Winter Olympian ever.

Team GB rounded off a successful games with two curling medals, to equal their best ever medal haul, which was in Chamonix ,in 1924. The women won bronze, whereas the men won silver, after getting thrashed 9-3 in the final by Canada. Also Dave Ryding finished eighteenth in the men’s ski slalom, and Team GB’s four man bobsleigh finished fifth, gradually climbing up the rankings throughout the event, after finishing tenth in run one.

Due to such a successful games, UK Sport says it expects to increase funding for winter sports ahead of the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang.
