Blyth Spartans defeated Farsley AFC 2-0 to progress to the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Trophy, thanks to a brace from Damen Mullen.

The first half was a tight and scrappy affair, with Blyth carving out the only clear-cut opportunity, when a Damen Mullen shot fell to the feet of Mathew Wade just inside the area, but his effort struck the post.

The game sparked into life in the second half however, when Farsley debutant Kyle Harrison brought down Arran Wearmouth in the box, allowing Damen Mullen to give Blyth the lead from the spot. This sparked Farsley into life and within minutes Peter Jeffries had to make a save after Luke Porritt slipped in Aiden Savory. Savory had another chance soon after when Kyle Hancock crossed, but he headed the ball over. Immediately afterwards Farsley came even closer when Matt Dempsey’s cross was headed goal wards by Spencer Harris, only to see his effort cleared off the line. Blyth doubled their lead when Damen Mullen crossed from a free-kick, the ball bypassing everybody as it hit the back of the net. With less than 10 minutes remaining Blyth almost sealed the victory when Arran Wearmouth’s shot was well saved by ‘keeper Tom Taylor, before the Farsley defence scrambled it away. As the game headed into injury time Farsley almost snatched a lifeline as Dempsey’s cross-come-shot was turned goal wards by substitute Marcus Edwards before it was blocked on the line, summing up Farsley’s day. So near, yet so far.
