Brighouse upset the odds on Boxing Day by defeating local play-off chasing rivals Farsley AFC 1-0 at the Dual Seal Stadium, thanks to an excellent and composed defensive display.

Brighouse had the first chance of the game when Thomas Matthews rattled the crossbar after letting fly from all of 30 yards. Farsley had a good chance of their own moments later when Priestley flicked the ball to Nightingale, who had his shot well saved by Jacob Giles. Early substitute Ryan Hall started to cause problems for the Farsley defence, and had an effort well saved by ‘keeper Tom Taylor. Moments later Farsley’s problems defending set pieces came back to haunt them again as Ben Thornton’s free-kick was headed home by Bill Law. Robbie O’Brien had a chance to equalise when he fired inches wide from the edge of the box. Just before half-time Farsley had their best chance of the game when Savory shot from close range only to see his effort cleared off the line.

The second half was a much tighter affair with fewer chances, however the first chance of it fell to Andy Welsh who’s shot from the edge of the area was straight at the ‘keeper. Throughout the rest of the half Farsley dominated but couldn’t find that final ball, and Brighouse almost wrapped it up when Bill Law went through on goal before Taylor rushed out to save his effort. Farsley had one more chance in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Luke Porritt shot just wide form inside the area.
