Nostell Miners Welfare stunned Farsley Celtic in the first qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup courtesy of an injury time winner from Maz Fenton on a night of torrential rain at Throstle Nest.
The young Celts thought they had taken the lead early on as Joseph Renouccie turned home Brandon Huges-Miller free-kick only for the linesman to disallow the goal for offside. Huges-Miller then created a another good chance from a free-kick only this time to be denied by Welfare ‘keeper Elliot Campbell who made a smart save with his feet. Just after the half hour mark Farsley took the lead as Campbell fumbled Harvey Booth’s long range effort before Danny Edwards slotted home the rebound. However they couldn’t hang onto their lead for long as Jay Hall raced through and tucked the ball into the back of the net. Nostell almost took the lead just moments later as a sweetly struck free-kick by Maz Fenton crashed into the crossbar. Edwards then had a great chance to secure a brace however he put the ball over from six yards out.
Just after the hour mark Farsley struck the woodwork as Daniel Bambrook fired goalwards from close range. Bambrook then had a chance late on to win the game as he had a shot from the edge of the box only for it to be take a slight deflection and fly inches wide. However immediately after The Celts did take the lead as Huges-Miller crossed to the back post for Harvey Booth who lashed back across goal into the bottom corner. Once again Farsley failed to hold onto their lead as substitute Bailey Holderness squeezed a cross over for Joel Blackburn who nodded home at the back post to seemingly secure an extra 30 minutes for Nostell. However Nostell managed to seal a sensational comeback after Jay Hall’s last gasp free-kick was flicked into the net past Farsley ‘keeper Chris Cater by Maz Fenton to secure Nostell’s passage into the next round.
