Farsley Celtic welcome York City to Throstle Nest as both sides begin their pre-season preparations ahead of life in a new division. Saturday 29th April 2017 proved a significant day in the history of these two Yorkshire clubs, with York’s 2-2 draw with Forest Green Rovers not enough to prevent relegation to the National League North for the first time in their history. Meanwhile Farsley Celtic won a thrilling playoff final 4-2 against Ossett Town to reach the Evo-Stik Premier Division for the first time since the club was reformed in 2010.
It has been an unusual offseason at Throstle Nest following promotion, with managers Neil Parsley and John Deacey both resigning before Adam Lakeland took over with the assistance of ex-Farsley striker Mark Bett. This will be the first opportunity for the Farsley faithful to see their new signings in action as the likes of Danny Ellis, Kurt Harris and Luke Parkin pull on a Farsley shirt for the first time, alongside some of last season’s promotion winning heroes such as James Walshaw, Adam Clayton and Ryan Watson, as well as many others.
Despite a nightmare league campaign York did triumph in the FA Trophy final at Wembley as they defeated Macclesfield Town 3-2, so will be looking to build on that victory and bounce straight back into the National League. Like Farsley, York have also been busy in the transfer market this offseason acquiring Jon Worsnop, Connor Smith, Josh Law, Louis Almond and Theo Wharton, as well as making Amari Morgan Smith’s loan deal permanent.
The last time these two sides met was in the 2007/08 Conference Premier season with York prevailing 4-1 on both occasions as The Celts eventually succumbed to relegation, however many will remember Roy Stamer’s thunderbolt in the televised game at Throstle Nest. Since that season both clubs have had differing fortunes with York reaching the Football League and The Celts being liquidated and relegated to the NCEL, however the two sides are now separated by just one division.
So come down to Throstle Nest to get your first look at the 2017/18 Farsley Celtic squad with kick off at 3pm on Saturday. Admission prices are just £7 adults, £4 concessions and £1 U16s. See you there!
